I recently lost one of my favorite hens to a mating injury. Her neck was broken in the dismount. I had two options. I had to either take the rooster out of the flock or do something to prevent this from happening again. I decided to make him some pants to prevent him from bothering my girls. My rooster has never really been that aggressive toward the girls, it was just an accident waiting to happen - and it did.
In addition to this rooster, I have four others, three of which are penned, and the fourth has his own private backyard area with two other hens. Having one too many roosters can be the downfall of your flock. A lot of people either sell them off or have them killed. I can't do that. All five of my roosters are so gentle with me, but aggressive with each other. Having rooster pants allows my boys to free range and enjoy a pen-free life while I get the relief of knowing they aren't fighting and aren't bothering my hens.
Rooster pants are made from hemp fleece, a natural fiber. They slip on over the rooster's head, much like how we put on a t-shirt. Slip roo's legs through the holes provided, snap the leg bands, pull out the wings and instantly you have a non-breeding, non-fighting rooster! Hemp fleece is durable, washable and sturdy enough to last a long time. If rooster gets in rain, remove the pants. Hemp takes a while to dry. I have a waterproof fabric that is a sort of mesh material if you prefer that. Roosters can be in the mesh material and get wet with no problem. Machine washable. Roosters need to be able to groom as usual at night, so the rooster pants have been made for easy removal.
